Gentleman Dabbler
I have consciously focused my
graphic design work torwards commissions for non-profit
organizations and theater groups. Providing my skill
set to such projects was my way of "giving back" to
the community.
I previously had volunteered my planning and logistical
support for various groups and causes. There arose a
distinct need for design work and every organization
was severly limited by budget constraints. Given my
artistic background, I offered my services to help fill
that void.
Looking back, this was definitely a "learn-on-the-job"
experience. This type of environment afforded me the
impetus and opportunity to quickly develop my graphic
"style". Working on these design projects has also made
a significant asethetic influence on the way I approach
my fine art. Where my previous paintings were more concerned
with texture and psychological implications, I now find
myself more enamored of formal concepts like color and
space.
This section also includes works that straddle graphic
design and fine art, borrowing equally from both sensibilities:
"Elizabeth Downpour and Dreaming Johnny", "All Alone",
and "When I'm Grown." Sometimes I wonder if such
distinctions are arbitrary. I'm beginning to think it's
all the same thing.
